1. MANCHESTER: INTRODUCTION
The story of Manchester is also the story of Britain’s Industrial Revolution that changed the entire economic profile of England in the 19th century. Earlier, before its fortunes looked up, Manchester was an unimportant town in the north English county of Lancashire. During the Industrial Revolution, Manchester concentrated on textile manufacture largely using thread imported cheap from India. The rise and prosperity of Manchester is one of the success stories of the British Empire. 2. FALLOWFIELD: INTRODUCTIONAs Manchester grew, its extended boundaries spawned new residential, academic and sports areas. FallowField is one such area, located approximately three miles from Manchester’s city centre. 3. FALLOWFIELD: CURRENT IDENTITIESToday, FallowField’s identities overlap. For instance, part of it is used as the University of Manchester’s student accommodation campus, named, appropriately, the FallowField Campus. The main student’s hall of residence is Owen’s Park. The South Manchester Synagogue with its distinctive architecture is in FallowField. FallowField has an unusual canine identity. It is home to the FallowField Beagles, one of the world’s top show dogs. Interesting, it is the centre point of a yet to be rated Leigh Dovey film titled The FallowField with a human-interest story. 4.FALLOWFIELD: PAST IDENTITIESFallowField’s sports identity ended in 1994 when Manchester University’s Richmond Park halls of residence were built there. Hardly anybody knows that the FA Cup final of 1893 was played at FallowField stadium. No trace of Fallow Field airstrip started in 1912 remains |
