Manchester City - Important facts

Geography: Manchester lies northwest of London, bordered to the north and east by the Pennine hills that run the length of Northern England and to the south by the Cheshire Plain.

Business and leisure: Manchester is a centre of the arts, the media, higher education and commerce. It forms part of the English Core Cities Group and is often referred to as the second city of the UK, and the "Capital of the North". Economically, Manchester is growing very quickly. It is the third most visited city in the United Kingdom by foreigners. It is the best place to locate your business. Manchester city centre –formally known as the City Centre– is the central business district of both Manchester and Greater Manchester.

Education: About 4.8 kms to the south of the city centre, lies Fallowfield, which has a large student population. The Fallowfield Campus is the main residential campus of the University of Manchester, and offers activities of students’ interest.

For music lovers: If you like music, Manchester has two symphony orchestras to choose from, the Hallé Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. For main pop music, the venue is the Manchester Evening News Arena, located next to Victoria station.

For nightlife: you can choose from The Ritz on Whitworth Street, The Music Box on Oxford Street, Po Na Na on Charles street and many more.

For shopping: if you are looking for good deals, there is Tib Street fashion market. If you are looking for haute couture, you can go to King’s street or Harvey Nichols on New Cathedral Street. If you do not have time to spare, but still would love to shop, you can visit Manchester Arndale Centre.

Sports: the 2002 Commonwealth Games were hosted in Manchester, and its two Premier League football teams, Manchester City and Manchester United are famous and popular all over the globe.
